Tuesday, April 20, 2004
The Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) has launched a youth athletic
scholarship programme to help develop young athletes in the region and assist
with their education and training needs.
The programme will also be beneficial to coaches and administrators.
CTO Director of Human Resources, Bonita Morgan believes this is a significant
step in the development of athletes in the region.
“Sports is a powerful motivator for Caribbean youths and is seen as a vehicle
for social and economic mobility,” she said.
“The CTO recognises the link between supporting talented young Caribbean
athletes and boosting sports tourism in the region.”
The Caribbean Youth Athletic Scholarship Fund, will be administered by the
CTO Foundation, which is the Caribbean Tourism Organisation scholarship
programme that was launched in 1997 to provide scholarships and study grants to
Caribbean students and tourism personnel who want to pursue studies in the area
of tourism/hospitality and language training.
Criteria for the application and selection process is being developed by an
advisory council, made up of successful athletes, coaches and sports
personalities that have an interest in helping to provide opportunities
athletically talented Caribbean youths.
“The CTO anticipates that it will offer the first scholarship early in 2005,”
Mrs Morgan said.
