Golf Tournament, Bahamas

Tuesday, April 20, 2004

Caribbean Junior Golf Champion Samantha Widmer has signed to attend Elon University in North Carolina and will become the first Caymanian to play golf in a NCAA Division one woman’s programme.

Widmer, 17 and a former student at Cayman Prep and High School, has achieved many accomplishments in the sport of golf, winning the Americas Cup at the Junior British Open in Scotland, in 2002 and the Caribbean Junior title in 2003.

She has played for the Cayman Islands Woman’s team since she was 15 and is presently ranked eighth among Caribbean woman.

Samantha was also awarded the Donald F Hunter Academic Scholarship to study at Trinity College in Ontario Canada for three years, where she captained the school’s golf team to consecutive wins in the Ontario Schools Athletic Federation.

While attending Elon University, Samantha will continue to play for Cayman’s national team and would like to win the Caribbean’s women’s title.

Her hours of practice, the many tournaments she has played, and her strong academic record, helped her achieve a coveted place on the top team and into a major university programme.
