Derrington ‘Bo’ Miller announced last Friday that he had decided to run as an
independent candidate for a seat in the Legislative Assembly as the
representative for North Side in November’s general election.
Twenty years ago, Mr. Miller also ran for the Legislative Assembly. In
looking back to that time, he noted, “If the truth is to be told, the same
issues I was focusing on then are the exact same issues that are not being
attended to today.”
The divisiveness he senses in the North Side is one of the major issues
propelling him into the public arena.
“Our community is divided,” he said. “Politics has contributed immensely to
this division and in many ways has brought the division about. I believe Cayman
politics spends too much time on pettiness and personality. I want to work on
issues that will start to bring the North Side together again.”
Saddened by the sacrifice of Rum Point to private interests, he vows to work
to preserve open lands for the North Side denizens, with a look toward creating
a national park and public beach.
Furthermore, he stressed the need for district councils to be established
which would then decide how to spend certain funds in their districts. “These
district councils will ensure the delivery of services often promised by and
later neglected by the central government,” he said.
In summarizing the main objectives of his campaign, he concluded, “Bringing
the community together is paramount. I want to unite the community, build a
better community, and preserve the most beautiful part of the Island.”
