Diving, said 10-year-old Joshua Springer, is even more fun than skateboarding, his favourite hobby before he discovered the delights of SCUBA diving on a recent vacation to Cayman
Brac.
The youngster from Sacramento, California was certified on Superbowl Sunday at the Divi Tiara Beach Resort, and was then able to dive with his two buddies – his dad, Keith and grandfather Arnold.
The three generations of Springers said that diving with each other was very special. Keith, who learned to dive when he was fifteen, has been buddying with his dad for twenty-five years. On this vacation, he said he kept a close eye on his father and on his son. Keith said he was “always watching both my kids”. Joshua said he was too busy watching the fish to watch his dad and his granddad too much.
Of his first seven dives, he said his favourites were Tarpon Reef and Greenhouse Reef. Though he is a seasoned snorkeller, he said he has now seen lots of new things as a diver, including a squid, parrot fish, flying guernard and a coral-banded shrimp.
Keith said he has been coming to the Divi Tiara on the Brac since 1998, and has been bringing Joshua with him since he was three years old. In fact, Joshua found a painted sign that he had made six years ago that had survived Hurricane Ivan.
It’s great coming back to the same hotel, said Joshua. He said that many staff members were old friends and he knew lots of people.
