First casualty of Election

Wednesday, March 16, 2005

Unable to mobilise the people and the funding needed to carry his bid for election to leadership in Bodden Town and in the Cayman Islands forward, George Ebanks announced his withdrawal from the race on 14 March.

Only one week after he reaffirmed his decision to contest the election for the Bodden Town seat, Mr Ebanks explained, “Along with my campaign committee, I thought that with the official announcement of my candidacy there would have been an indication of support at the level needed to fund and run the campaign.

“Even though some have given money, when that amount is put against what is needed in total, there is a big shortfall,” Mr Ebanks added.

“As well, attracting the number of foot soldiers needed is a problem. The time normally dedicated to work such as this is time persons are now using to restore and rebuild their homes,” Mr Ebanks said.

“Even for me, in a time like this, I have had to reconcile my need to be with the people, with things that need to be done on the home front,” Mr Ebanks revealed.

“Prior to Ivan I had more personal resources available. But now, with far more limited resources it will be difficult to get everything done.”

When asked how this move would reflect on the apparent seriousness of his intentions Mr Ebanks said, “In the elections of 1992 and 1995 I went all the way in seeking to offer myself for political service. In addition, this time around I have already issued a fully researched document on my political focus, so everyone knows where I stand,” he said.
