PPM launches new slogan for campaign

PPM Party leader
Kurt Tibbetts
Wednesday, March 16, 2005
“A government you can trust” has been chosen by the People’s Progressive
Movement, (PPM), as the party’s slogan for the rest of the race to capture
political office from the United Democratic Party, (UDP) in the 11 May
elections.
“A change in slogan at this time is not to be considered as a move away from
the meaning and importance of our former slogan ‘For the love of country’,”
explained PPM Party leader Kurt Tibbetts.
“When we previously began the election campaign, Hurricane Ivan was not in
the picture. The hurricane has changed many things now and as such we see the
need to have a new slogan, one that is more relevant to what is happening in our
Islands at this time.”
Speaking at the Movement’s National Council Meeting Mr Tibbetts declared that
the new slogan was chosen because “people don’t trust this government.”
Mr Tibbetts said that in the face of the reigning mistrust “the credibility
and the integrity of our candidates is something about which we can boast.”
According to political experts slogans that fit into the temper of a movement
are one of the things that have been found most valuable especially in cases
where the whole structure of society is affected.
With the official start to the 2005 general elections in the Cayman Islands
already signalled by H.E. the Governor Bruce Dinwiddy on 18 February – with the
issuing of writs of election to six returning officers for the six electoral
districts – Mr Tibbetts said, “for the last four to six weeks we have been doing
ground work on how best to conduct the campaign.”
“The slogan is only one aspect of our campaign programme,” Mr Tibbetts added.
“We have already started regular radio programmes on Mondays and Fridays at
12:30 pm.”
He said that a full schedule of times for television slots, public meetings
and other activities would be published in the near future.
As last lap activity gets into high gear Mr Tibbetts outlined aspects of what
he called “the fundamental theme of the PPM’s election campaign,” and added “the
PPM’s manifesto will be completed on 25 March.”
“Driving the PPM’s bid for office is a new culture of governance that abhors
secrecy, is prepared to talk to the press, will make public the minutes of
statutory boards, observes zero tolerance for conflicts of interest in relation
to government members’ private and public activities, will endorse the holding
of referenda on public issues and other such elements.”
