With the hurricane season once again upon us, the Leader of Government Business, Hon Kurt Tibbetts, said that businesses and the public sector cannot overlook digitally archiving documents, when he made the opening remarks at Project Ark: Disaster Planning and Recovery seminar at the Marriott Resort Grand Cayman on 29 June.

“The implications for businesses that lost documents makes it susceptible to lawsuits, false claims and loss of business due to lack of confidence,” said Mr Tibbetts. “Businesses cannot afford to be complacent. We must be prepared.”

Robert James Berry, Head of Compliance at the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, spoke on document management and the financial services industry. Derek Mendez of Deloitte delivered an address on business continuity planning and Polly Skibinski of Foreshore Corporate Services spoke about disaster recovery outside of the jurisdiction. Other speakers included Donovan Ebanks, Chairman of the Cayman Islands Hurricane Committee, Chris Nelson of Productive Business Solutions and Brian Bates of Xerox DocuShare.

Project Ark was developed by Xerox Jamaica to provide local businesses with information on digitally archiving documents that have financial and historic importance. The project was inspired by the Noah’s Ark story, which was considered a safe haven from a world flood illustrated in the Bible.
