Coffee shop puts on fundraiser to help Katrina
Friday, November 11, 2005
The little coffee shop “Daily Grind,” says it stepped up
to the plate, as a good corporate citizen when it hosted a fundraiser on
Saturday, 5 November to benefit some of those affected by Hurricane Katrina in
the Louisiana area.
“Beads and Beignets”, (ben-yays) the name of the
fundraiser featured freshly made beignets (French doughnuts) and café au laits.
That was in honour of the authentic taste of New Orleans made world famous by
the French Quarter landmark, Café Du Monde, the café in New Orleans, which has
become synonymous with beignets. On hand to compliment the beignets, were
delectable treats customised Mardi Gras beads.
Co-owner of the Daily Grind, Winston Connolly, a Loyola
University New Orleans alumnus said that there are quite a few locals who
attended Loyola or other tertiary education institutions in Louisiana who were
very touched by the destruction and damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.
“We all still have emotional ties with faculty and
friends in the New Orleans area and want to in some way contribute to their
recovery,” said Mr Connolly.
The theme “Beads and Beignets” was the brainchild of
Stacey VanDevelde who was instrumental in designing and purchasing the special
themed beads (“Cayman Loves New Orleans”) made for the event.
“Beads and Beignets” happened at the courtyard beneath
the Daily Grind coffee shop on Dr. Roy’s Drive between the Corita’s Copper
Kettle building and the new CNB.
Regular patrons were still able to enjoy their cup of
java in relative comfort upstairs in the coffee shop where all the regular
beverages and selections of pastries were available as well.
Other past alumni that have been instrumental in the
organization of the event along with Mr Connolly include Stacey VanDevelde
(nee Goubault), Jordana Clarke (nee Awe), David Kirkaldy and John Michael
Foster, amongst others.
