Cayman getting ready for Cross Island Relay

Wednesday,  January 11, 2006

Sunday 5 February will see the return of one of Cayman’s longest running sporting traditions – The Cross Island Relay.

The event, hosted by the Hash House Harriers, is celebrating its 32nd running this year, and promises to be back to its former glory after a rather more low key ‘invitational’ event last year.

Athletes and non-athletes of all abilities are invited to enter teams for the event. A team consists of six members, and each member will complete a 4 mile leg of the relay.

The emphasis of the event is much more on having a fun time than a fast time, so the running talent of entrants are a distant second to their capacity for fun.

The 2006 edition of the event will be sponsored by Scotiabank and Trust (Cayman) Limited.

The event starts in East End and finishes at the Truman Bodden Sports Centre. The six legs are:

1) East End to the Blow Holes

2) Blow Holes to the Frank Sound Junction

3) Frank Sound Junction to the old Drive In Theatre at Bodden Town

4) Bodden Town to Savannah Meadows

5) Savannah Meadows to the Old Crewe Road / South Sound Junction

6) South Sound Junction to the Truman Bodden Sports Centre

There will be water stops half way along each leg and a post race breakfast and awards ceremony. All competitors will receive a race T shirt. The entry fee is CI$ 60 per team.

Organisers hope that the event will draw upward of 20 teams, and sports clubs, corporations, and government departments are encouraged to enter teams for what promises to be a great day out.

Further details can be obtained from John Elliott on 947-7720 or Philip Sutcliffe on 814-2015. Entry forms can be obtained from any HASH member or from any Scotia Bank branch.
