Women in Sport promotion set to push limits & break barriers

Monday,  March 6, 2006

As part of “Honouring Women” month in March, the Department of Youth and Sports are organising a number of events to promote “Women in Sport”. The campaign is being run under the motto “Pushing limits and breaking barriers” and aims to build the involvement of women in sport.

The first official event takes place on Monday 6 March, when the South Sound Squash Club will host a “Women in Squash” promotion.

The event will start at 7:00 pm, and will include exhibition matches by some of Cayman’s top female squash players, as well as an opportunity for newcomers to try out the game. There will also be prizes for newcomers who show promise, in order to encourage more women to get involved in the sport.

There will be snacks and drinks as well, making it an excellent way for prospective players to have a look at the sport in a more social and less testosterone-loaded environment.

South Sound Squash Club has also announced that, in support of “Honouring Women” month, they will offer a special for women, with club membership discounted to $49. The offer is valid during Honouring Women month, and membership will run until the end of June, which is the end of the club’s membership year.

This is a 50 percent discount on the normal pro-rated membership, and the club hopes that this will encourage new members to join. For those interested in joining, please note that a $50 deposit on the new member’s bar/court fee will also be required at sign-up.

Organiser of the event, Merta Day, expressed her hope that the event will give women’s involvement in sport a much-needed shot in the arm.
“This month marks the great strides women have made in sports in our society as athletes and administrators,” she said.

“I take this opportunity as Sports Coordinator for Women Department of Youth and Sports to invite all women and girls who are presently involved in sports, whether it’s as an elite or recreational level to continue their involvement in sports and to encourage women who live sedentary life styles to make a lifestyle change and grasp the opportunities that are being highlighted as a part of “Honouring Women” month and the many types of sports programmes being offered by the various businesses in our society.”

Those who still have not found the sport that is a good fit for them, or who need help starting out in a sport, are more than welcome to contact the Sports Office for advice on 949-7082.
