Chamber and Labour Department offer HR compliance course
The Chamber of Commerce’s Professional Development & Training Centre has partnered with the Department of Labour & Pensions and the Ministry responsible for Employment to offer an important Human Resource Compliance course dealing with the proper construction of employment contracts, and will host the first one for 2013 on 28 February at the Chamber’s facilities at Governors Square.
“This new partnership with the Department of Labour and Pensions and the Ministry responsible for employment compliments the course offerings of the Chamber’s Professional Development and Training Centre,” remarked Chamber CEO Wil Pineau. “I am delighted that Mario Ebanks will be delivering the first of what we hope will be several employment related courses for Chamber members. Learning the best practices for developing employment contracts will help to foster a positive working environment for employers and employees and Mr Ebanks’ knowledge and professional experience will be extremely useful to anyone who enrolls in the course.”
Mr Ebanks, Director of Labour and Pensions, stated: “I am delighted to join forces with the Chamber of Commerce on this important matter, seeing that when I was the Manager of the Chamber in the mid 1980s to 1991 I played a key role in reviving the training programme. Having proper employment contracts is one of the most crucial areas to ensure tranquil workplace relations in the Cayman Islands, and it is severely lacking. I encourage business
owners and managers to attend this course, to learn and share about how to properly construct and administer employment contracts, and thereby allow their workplace to be one of excellence. The Department of Labour and the Ministry of Employment looks forward to working with other partners and stakeholders to promote best practices and to instill a ‘culture of compliance’.”
The course, HR Compliance 1 – Fundamentals of Employment Contracts, will feature a combination of theory and fundamentals with a hands-on approach in order to enhance confidence levels in the drafting and amending of proper employment contracts, primarily in compliance with the Labour Law (2011 Revision) and “best practices”.
Attendees will be given a solid basis for developing their own instruments as well as appreciate the legislative mandate for Employment Contracts, and penalties for
non-compliance. Attendees will also have an opportunity to practice on developing or fine-tuning their organisation’s own employment contract.
Course facilitator Mario Ebanks is a graduate of the School of Business
Administration of the University of Miami, and holds a BBA degree in International Finance & Marketing, with a minor in Economics. He also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Tennessee. He is also a graduate of the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and SHRM “Business of Human Resources” executive certification series, as well as a participant in the Disney’s Human Resource Management certificate programme. He has served in various capacities in
both the private and public sectors, where he maintains extensive and high-level contacts.
