New Brac restaurant caters to families

Diners are greeted with a friendly smile at the White Bay Café

Cayman Brac’s newest dining hotspot opened its doors last month. The locally-owned White Bay Café at the White Bay Plaza in West End is housed in the historic building that many Cayman Brackers will remember was once a cinema and later a hardware store.

Many restaurants claim to offer “something for everyone,” but a peek at The White Bay Café’s menu suggests it might have actually achieved such a goal with selections that include steak, grilled shrimp, quesadillas, pizza, wraps, fried chicken, fish and chips, hamburgers, hotdogs, ice cream, homemade cakes, pies, cupcakes and fresh salads that come with or without grilled chicken, fish or shrimp.

“We will offer a wide selection of healthy, tasty food for both kids and grownups,” says owner Dorothy Scott, who also promises that their prices will fit everyone’s budget.

Diners have the option of eating in the café’s spacious, air-conditioned dining room, grabbing a bite at the snack bar, or taking their meal to go. As an added bonus, The White Bay Café plans to turn its parking lot into a barbeque area on weekends with an industrial-sized smoker and grill acquired for just that purpose.

Barbecues will include the choice of rotisserie chicken, jerk chicken and pork, barbequed ribs, and roasted fish. On selected nights, the Café also offers traditionally-prepared Escovitch fish and other special dishes.

Mrs Scott, who also is head chef of the Café, owned a restaurant in Grand Cayman prior to moving to Cayman Brac. Joining her in the kitchen is Chef Damian Wongken from Jamaica.

The duo’s “secret weapon” in meal preparation is an air cooker in which all excess oil and fat drains out of the meat as it’s cooked. “It’s unbelievable how much fat and oils drain from the food while cooking,” says Mrs Scott. “I’m glad my customers won’t have to eat it.”

The air cooker can roast, grill and steam entire meals, making them much healthier and lower in fat than if the same meal were cooked any other way, and without sacrificing flavor.

“Actually, I think the food tastes even better when it’s prepared with the air cooker,” she says. “It’s nice and juicy, tender and full of flavor, without any grease or fat.”

Mrs Scott imported the air cooker from Canada and cooks all the Café’s meals with it, except for french fries and grilled food. “With this cooking device,” she adds, “we can offer the fast food kids love so much, without feeling bad anymore! And grownups will love it, too!”

The White Bay Café is designed to be a family-friendly spot by providing kids with game machines and toys. The dining area is large enough for celebrations and get-togethers with family and friends. A popcorn maker and cotton candy machine are available for group parties, and the Café also offers a catering service for birthday parties and other events.

The Café provides party platters for pickup, as well as a monthly lunch menu for students at all Island schools with delivery included. The Café is open seven days a week from 11 am to 10 pm.
