Published on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Email To Friend    Print Version

Tropical Storm Gustav is expected to regain hurricane strength tomorrow evening as it passes north of Jamaica. Tropical storm force winds are likely to start affecting the Sister Islands from around 11 p.m. Thursday, 28 August.

Therefore, the Cayman Islands remain under a hurricane watch. This means that hurricane conditions could begin to affect the Islands within 36 hours.

The timing of local activities such as airport closures, etc., will be announced later.

At 4:00 p.m., the centre of Tropical Storm Gustav was located near 19.1 N 74.4 W, or 354 miles east of the Sister Islands and 456 miles east of Grand Cayman. Gustav is moving west to northwest at 3 mph, with maximum sustained winds near 50 mph.

The forecast is for Gustav to be a category 1 hurricane as it passes north of the Sister Islands around 1 a.m. Friday.

The Sister Islands Emergency Committee is monitoring Tropical Storm Gustav and making preparations, and keeping in close touch with Hazard Management Cayman Islands.

Cayman Islands residents should monitor all local media outlets that carry local news in order to stay informed about Gustav.

Advice to local population:

Residents should always be in a state of readiness during hurricane season. At this time, residents should:
  1. Have food and medicine supplies
  2. Have shuttering supplies
  3. Have important documents, including travel documents, in order
  4. Look after marine interests
  5. Have a pet safety plan
  6. Check generator and have fuel
  7. Make sure that your family, and persons who will be staying with you in the event of a storm, are aware of the plan.

The next JCS bulletin will be issued at 11 p.m. local time today (Wednesday, 27 August).

J. Bartenstein:
Sandra, I have often wondered the same thing. I recently sent an e-mail to CNN asking them to add the Cayman Islands to their computer weather map, at least. Maybe if more people do the same they will listen.

Sandra Shelley:
I used to live on Grand Cayman several years ago and still have friends on the island and what I was wondering is why the US national news or weather never even mentions the Cayman Islands when a hurricane is threatening the islands.

G. Locher:
I agree. I had the same frustrations in the Ivan aftermath. I think it is time for a grassroots effort with the US media.

Crissa Cichon:
Hello I was wondering if there is ANYWHERE you can find the up to date weather for the Cayman Islands? My brother lives on the Island and it is scary not knowing what is happening and wondering if he is OK. I am contacting our local news stations here to see if they have any idea where I can find anything

Dianne Cowan:
I agree with the letters. This country never seems to mention Cayman; I always have to read your articles which are very, very good, and get in touch with my son and family who live in Cayman. More should be printed to help families in England left to worry. Marvellous we can get in touch with your programme. Thank you. Dianne Cowan

Amanda Cockburn-Dilbert:
We are praying for the Dilbert family in the Cayman Islands, and all their brothers and sisters. Keep this family safe, Lord.

Martin Giles:
My wife and I are regular visitors to the Cayman Islands and can only hope and pray that Gustav passes by with little or no damage to your wonderful islands!
