Monica Powery, mother of two sons, decided she wanted a job that would allow her to “be a mom” and spend “more time” with her children. So she created Young @ Art Enrichment and Entertainment Programme in September 2009.

“Young @ Art enrichment and entertainment programme is what the name says,” according to Ms Powery. “It offers creative exploration for preschool and primary school-aged children through arts, crafts, literature, dancing, singing and music.”

She visits children’s parties or schools where she entertains them by showing them arts and crafts that they can participate in, often according to a fun theme they have chosen— anything from making piggy banks to painting umbrellas or soccer balls—and includes face painting and storytelling, as well.

“One of the programmes is called Story Art,” she said, “which is reading a story and then playing games that support the story, and doing crafts too, which helps kids remember what they read.”

She has provided workshops at the Lighthouse School, Savannah, Red Bay and George Town Primary schools.

A specialty of hers is face and body painting; which she offers not only for children, but for adults too, not just for birthday parties but for theatrical performance and dance troupes as well.

“I also offer magic shows as one of the services,” she adds, “featuring the ‘Mighty Ricardo’ who does amazing magic shows.”

Ms Powery has “always had” an interest in art and was keen on painting in high school, she said, so that her new line of business is truly something she enjoys. “I also wanted to offer a service that was not only fun,” she said, “but educational as well.”
